Rootsteps will make your website climate neutral from January 2022
Auteur:
Rootsteps will make websites climate neutral from January 2022! We are extremely proud of this achievement for which (among other things) servers have been redesigned, websites have moved and where we have chosen to only work with suppliers - who, like us, invest back in nature.
We plant trees
By just choosing a website that is created/maintained at Rootsteps, you are helping nature; all CO2 emissions are offset as much as possible by investing an equal amount of CO2 absorbing effects back into our planet.
We are involved in the Eden Reforestation Project, GrowMyTree and JustDiggit, among others. By writing this post, we planted 167 new trees this year. In doing so, we will compensate for more than 3,674 kilograms of CO2 emissions in 2021, equivalent to ~ 85% of all our CO2 emissions throughout the year.
Dump the car, let's ride a bike
We loved the heated seats in the company's diesel; but the knowledge about the damage it causes made us think of another gear. We're over to 'videocalls first' - and we take public transport where possible or cycle to our appointments within 10 kilometres.
Green servers
As icing on the cake, the servers that Rootsteps uses will be transferred from January 2022 to only be online via green energy! In doing so, we reached our target to compensate 8,800 Kilograms of CO2 and reached the finish line much earlier than we thought possible.
2022 Update: New Electric Car
We have now purchased an electric Citroën ë-berlingo to go to our appointments green and with minimal impact. Simple, functional and sustainable
2023 Update: We planted 844 trees in 2022
How do we calculate emissions and climate impact?
At Rootsteps, we strongly believe in taking responsibility for our impact on the environment. We understand that business activities are often associated with greenhouse gas emissions, and we strive to minimize these negative consequences. That's why we've decided to take action and take responsibility for offsetting our CO2 emissions.
By planting 1566 trees in 2022, we have not only contributed to restoring nature, but also to reducing the effects of climate change. Trees play an essential role in absorbing CO2 and producing oxygen, making them a valuable asset in combating global warming.
We are proud of this achievement and would like to thank everyone who contributed to this success. Together, we have taken a step towards a more sustainable future. However, we do not intend to stop here. We remain committed to reducing our environmental footprint and taking measures that benefit our company and the world around us.
Below you can read our CO2 compensation calculations and our future goals. We invite you to keep reading and be inspired by our commitment to a greener and more sustainable planet. Together, we have a positive impact and create a world where sustainability and growth go hand in hand. Thanks for your interest and involvement in Rootsteps!
Emission factors and calculations
- Websites: Assume that the emission factor for websites is 0.1 tons of CO2 per 10,000 page views and, on average, each website generates 7,560 page views per month. Then the CO2 emissions per website per year are: (0.1 tons of CO2/10,000 page views) * (7,560 pageviews per month) * 12 months = 0.09072 tons of CO2.
- Servers: Assume that the emission factor for servers is 2 tons of CO2 per server per year and you have 3 servers. Then the CO2 emissions from servers per year are: 2 tons of CO2/server * 3 servers = 6 tons of CO2.
- Electric car: The number of miles driven by the electric car is not specified in the new data, so we can't calculate the car's CO2 emissions without this information.
- Office with air conditioning units: The energy consumption of the air conditioning units has changed to 7,500 kWh per year. Let's use the same emission factor of 0.5 tonnes of CO2 per MWh. Then the CO2 emissions of the air conditioning units per year are: (7,500 kWh/1000) * 0.5 tons of CO2/MWh = 3.75 tons of CO2.
- CO2 emissions from websites + CO2 emissions from servers + CO2 emissions from electric cars + CO2 emissions from air conditioning units = 0.09072 tons of CO2 + 0 tons of CO2 + 0 tons of CO2 + 3.75 tons of CO2 = 3.84072 tons of CO2.
Total emissions: CO2 emissions from websites + CO2 emissions from servers + CO2 emissions from electric cars + CO2 emissions from air conditioning units = 0.09072 tons of CO2 + 6 tons of CO2 + 0 tons of CO2 + 3.75 tons of CO2 = 9.84072 tons of CO2.
Compensation calculation of emissions
It is generally assumed that an average tree can absorb around 22 kg of CO2 per year over its lifespan. So to offset the estimated CO2 emissions of 9,84072 tons per year, Rootsteps should have planted around 448 trees by 2022.
