How fast technology is evolving and the impact on our websites
Auteur:
In today's society, technology has become indispensable. We use it in our daily lives for a variety of purposes, from communication to entertainment and from information collection to purchasing behavior. One of the most notable aspects of technology is the speed at which it evolves. New developments and innovations follow each other in rapid succession, and this also has major consequences for how we use and design websites.
In the early years of computing, in the 40s and 50s, computers were huge and expensive. They were often only available to large organizations such as governments or universities and were used for specific tasks such as performing mathematical calculations or processing large amounts of data.
The speed of these computers was extremely slow compared to modern computers. The first computers could only perform a few calculations per second, while modern computers could perform billions of calculations per second. This is possible by developing smaller, more powerful and cheaper computer components such as processors and memory.
To give an example, the first computers such as UNIVAC I from 1951 were the size of a house, had a capacity of only a few kilobytes, and could only perform a few hundred calculations per second. While modern smartphones, for example, are already faster than the oldest supercomputers ever made.

Kids and Technology
An angle that is about kids and technology is how quickly children learn to use technology. Children are often much faster than adults to understand and use new technologies. This can be an advantage because, for example, they often work better with touchscreens, or can switch between different apps more quickly. But this can also lead to problems such as children being at risk of spending too much time on technology, or being susceptible to dangers such as cyberbullying or sexual behavior on the Internet. It is therefore important that parents are aware of these risks and educate their children to use technology responsibly.
Mobile devices
One of the most significant changes we've seen in recent years is the increasing popularity of mobile devices. People are increasingly using smartphones and tablets to browse the internet instead of desktop computers. This means that websites that are not optimized for mobile use are left behind. Many designers and developers have responded by applying “responsive design”, which automatically adjusts the layout of a website to the device's screen size.
Voice search & voice commands
Another important development is the growing popularity of “voice search”. More and more people are using voice recognition on their mobile devices or smart speakers to search the web. This has major implications for search engine optimization and the use of keywords on websites. Below are 3 reasons why voice commands can be used.
- Convenience: Voice commands make it easier to access information and features without using your hands. This can be useful if, for example, you're driving or doing another task where you don't want to use your hands.
- Access: Voice commands can also help access information or features for people who have difficulty using a mouse or keyboard. This can apply, for example, to people with reduced mobility or visual disabilities.
- Productivity: Voice commands can also help increase productivity by providing faster access to information and features and reducing time spent typing text or navigating through an interface.
Raymond Kurzweil
The philosopher often associated with the idea of exponential increases in technological development is Ray Kurzweil. He is a renowned futurist and technology innovator who proposed the concept of the “Technological Singularity,” in which technological growth is increasing exponentially and humanity is reaching a new phase of evolution. Kurzweil writes about this topic in his book, including “The Singularity Is Near”.

Are computers taking over the world?
Some futurists and technologists, such as Ray Kurzweil, believe that the technological singularity will happen, with artificial intelligence becoming so advanced that it surpasses human intelligence. According to them, this would lead to a fundamental change in how the world functions and would enable humanity to transcend its biological limitations. Others believe that this progress will happen, but that it does not necessarily mean that computers will take over the world, but that there will be closer cooperation between people and machines. There are also people who are concerned about the potential danger of unintended consequences of this technology, such as the development of an artificial superintelligence that can inadvertently cause harm.
It is important to emphasize that much is unknown about future developments in artificial intelligence. There are many uncertainties and unknowns, and the outcome will depend on how we develop the technology and how we ensure that it is used safely and ethically.
